THE MUSEUM OF EMBELLISHED HISTORY presents WASSAIC
On view at the Wassaic Project as part of their 2024 Summer Exhibition: Tall Shadows in Short Order
May 18 - September 14, 2024

Cate Pasquarelli’s Museum of Embellished History operates as an ongoing series of exhibitions, publications, and other ephemera. These expressions question the “truth” of true stories, gleefully embrace old wives’ tales, and allow the artist’s imagination to create alternate histories within the accepted historical framework of institutional museums.

Specifically in Wassaic, Pasquarelli reflects on how collaborative memory, imprecise historical records, and the demise of the small-town newspaper can erase the understanding of recent events just as completely as these elements have obscured the distant past.

This exhibition presents Wassaic as a dream, or perhaps a nightmare. Things are happening simultaneously, yet the stillness of the model and the darkness of the room allow details to emerge. There are agreed-upon truths in this diorama, but ultimately no one is entirely sure what happens to their status when they share the same world with the imagination.
